Good news! Kidney transplants will soon be performed free of charge at QSUT

Kidney transplant will be done soon in the Nephrology service at QSUT.

Although this project started a few years ago in collaboration with a team of Italian doctors, it was possible to perform only one transplant as this service at QSUT did not offer the appropriate conditions.

But now there is good news for patients with severe renal failure as they will be able to perform a transplant in the public hospital.

"It is about starting with the kidney transplant, we believe that within the year transplants will start in public hospitals by our doctors with the support of Italian doctors" - said Arben Gjata.

The new laboratory and the reconstruction of the premises in public hospitals, the sterilization of medical equipment will now make it possible to carry out interventions of these dimensions that have so far been carried out outside Albania or in non-public hospitals.

"It requires the drafting of a special law to include Albania in the European transplant bank and to convince the population to donate organs that it is a matter of livers that are taken from living donors who have lost their lives and who can donate organs" - adds Arben Gjata .

Kidney transplantation has so far been possible thanks to hospital packages in non-public hospitals financed by the compulsory health care fund.
