The former president of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, has passed away at the age of 79, in Dubai after a serious illness from which he had been suffering for some time, reports "Aljazeera".
The former general suffered from amyloidosis, a rare disease that causes organ damage. In a brief statement, senior military personnel expressed "heartfelt condolences" on the death of the former military ruler.
"May Allah bless the soul of the deceased and give strength to the family of the deceased", they say.
Musharraf, a former special forces commando, became president at the end of a string of military coups that have rocked Pakistan since its founding amid India's bloody partition in 1947. He seized power by ousting then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif. .
He led the nuclear-armed state after his 1999 coup through tensions with India, a nuclear proliferation scandal and an insurgency. He resigned in 2008.
