A Russian politician has asked directly from the state television stage to replace Vladimir Putin.

It is the first time anyone has directly called for Putin's replacement on a televised broadcast.

"We should choose someone else, not Putin. Then everything will change for the better", declared the opposition politician, Boris Nadezhdin.

A well-known critic of the Russian occupation of Ukraine, he made it necessary to restore relations with Europe.

"With the current political regime there is no way for us to return to Europe... We must choose someone else and not Putin," Nadezhdin said clearly.

"We just need to elect different authorities to rule the country and stop this story with Ukraine," he told NTV, one of the three main state channels in Russia.

He pointed out that another government would allow Russia to "build relations" with European countries and "everything will return to its place".
