A 21-year-old who has been repeatedly raped and abused by her teenage brother since the age of six says she "does not blame her parents" for not reporting her to police when he admitted what he had done 13 years ago.
The young woman who was bullied by her older brother for two years said 'goodbye' to her abuser while he was jailed for three years.
Aoife Farrelly, 21, of County Meath, Ireland, was repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted by her brother Cian, now 30, when she was between six and eight, and he was aged between 15 and 17.
The abuse only stopped when she told her parents what her brother had done. They confronted him but did not call the police.
Speaking outside Central Dublin Criminal Court after Cian's sentencing, Aoife waived her right to anonymity in the hope that this would encourage other sexual assault survivors to speak out.
Cian Farrelly was 15 years old when he started abusing his little sister, who often remained in his care, reports Independent.ie.
The court heard disturbing details of how Farrelly would put his hand over his little sister's mouth to drown out her screams as he raped her and told her the abuse was 'our secret'.
In her statement about the victim's influence, Aoife said she did not blame her parents, but felt they did not realize how traumatized she had been by her brother's abuse.
During the pandemic, Aoife was 'trapped' in the family home with him. In October 2020 she made a statement to the police and denounced her brother for the abuse he had done to her.
Speaking boldly to her abuser in court, she said 'goodbye' to the man who had 'torn her whole world apart.
She shared horrific details of cases where her brother abused her, including an incident when she burned her finger at the age of seven and Cian put it in her mouth.
Later that week, Aoife reminded her brother of asking for a hug before touching him inappropriately.
"I am much happier now than I was," she said. "No sentence would have been long enough… but just hearing the title sentence was enough for me.
She added that she is determined to continue her life, saying: “I am Aoife Farrelly, this has happened to me, but it will not define me anymore. "Today is the beginning of the rest of my life and I am very grateful that I finally got a small piece of justice that I had to pursue."
