NATO one step away from a drastic turn, the alliance can deploy troops in Ukraine, what lies behind the hypothesis and why member countries are risking so much

NATO one step away from a drastic turn, the alliance can deploy troops in

In the event that from the NATO summit in Vilnius, scheduled for July 11 and 12 in the capital of Lithuania, the member countries of the Atlantic Alliance, including the United States, should not give real security guarantees to Ukraine, then some of they may be willing to deploy their respective troops on Ukrainian territory in support of Kiev. This is the hypothesis raised by former NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen, the same one who served as Volodymyr Zelensky's official advisor. for the entry of the nation attacked by Russia into the European security architecture. As reported by "The Guardian", Rasmussen also made it known that, even if a group of states will put adequate security guarantees on Ukraine's table, the other actors would not allow the issue of Kyiv's entry into NATO to remain outside Vilnius' agenda. His statements came at a very delicate moment, precisely when the current head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, was explaining that the issue of the aforementioned security guarantees would be on the agenda of the summit. However, Stoltenberg added that, according to Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, NATO offers full security guarantees only to full members of the Organization.

Deploying troops

In such a scenario, US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith said a number of options were being considered "to signal that Ukraine is making progress in its relations with NATO". However, this may not be enough to protect Kiev from possible future tensions. And precisely for this reason, Rasmussen raised the hypothesis of deploying the troops of some NATO countries deployed on Ukrainian territory. "There is a possibility that some countries can act individually," he said. For example, the spotlight is on Poland, which has supported Zelensky's government since the outbreak of the conflict, as well as the Baltic states. "I would not rule out the possibility that it will be even more engaged and followed by the Baltic states, perhaps including the possibility of deploying troops on the ground," Rasmussen pointed out. "The Poles think that for a long time Western Europe has not listened to their warnings against the real Russian mentality," he concluded. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has announced that he had a phone call with Stoltenberg, within the framework of the upcoming NATO summit in July. "Allies must take a decisive step towards the acceptance of Ukraine. We are not looking for NATO troops on the ground to end this war. We are asking for guarantees to avoid future wars," Kuleba tweeted after the call. The Ukrainian minister himself explained in a television interview that NATO countries will not send troops to Ukraine until the end of the war. Anëtarësimi i Ukrainës
