Russian state-controlled company Gazprom PJSC suspended natural gas supplies to Italy, escalating a deepening energy crisis in Europe.
The supply of Russian gas through the Tarvisio pipeline to Italy will be zero from today, October 1, after Gazprom announced that supplying Italy through Austria is impossible.
"Gazprom informed that it is unable to confirm the gas volumes requested for today, saying that it is not possible to supply gas through Austria. Therefore, today's supplies of Russian gas to Eni through the Tarvisio entry point will be zero ," Eni SpA, Italy's largest oil company, said in a statement on its official website.
The gas cut to Italy comes days after underwater explosions damaged the main Nord Stream gas pipeline linking Russia to Europe.
US President Joe Biden yesterday echoed the assessment of Western European leaders that the pipelines had been sabotaged, stressing that Russian statements about the incident should not be believed.
