Shanghai today marked the hottest May day in 100 years, according to an announcement from the meteorological service.
"At 1:09 p.m., the temperature at Sujiahui Station reached 36.1 degrees Celsius, breaking the record for the highest temperature in May dating back 100 years," Weibo said.
A few hours later, the temperature in the center of Shanghai reached 36.7 degrees Celsius, according to the same source. In mid-May, the UN warned that the period 2023-27 is almost certain to be the hottest on record on Earth due to greenhouse gases and the El Niño weather phenomenon.
The global temperature is expected to rise by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial period, an ambitious target adopted under the Paris Climate Agreement, the World Meteorological Organization estimated.
