South Africa is considering legal options if Russian President Vladimir Putin, the subject of an arrest warrant for war crimes, attends a summit of BRICS emerging economies in Johannesburg in August. The news was announced by the foreign minister of South Africa, Naledi Pandor.

The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for the Russian president regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and South Africa as a member of the ICC will theoretically be required to arrest him if he attends the BRICS summit.

"Our government is currently looking at what the legal options are regarding this matter, and I have indicated that it is something that the president will be the best person to talk about once it has reached a conclusion," Pandor said at the meeting. of BRICS foreign ministers in Cape Town.

Invitations have been issued to all heads of state from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa for the August 22-24 summit in Johannesburg, she added.

The ICC issued the warrant for Putin in March and accuses him of war crimes, forcibly expelling children from Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine. On the other hand, Moscow denies the accusations.
