Massive fires in Canada, thousands of Americans are advised to use masks

Millions of people in North America have been advised to wear masks when leaving their homes due to poor air quality caused by intense wildfires in Canada.

In New York, the free distribution of masks will begin on June 8. Canada has said that masks must be worn whenever people cannot stay indoors.

Officials have warned that dangerous levels of smoke are expected over the weekend. Most of the smoke comes from Quebec, Canada, where 150 fires have been reported.

More than 15,000 residents are expected to be evacuated in the area, officials said Wednesday. This year has broken the record for the most fires recorded in the Quebec area.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Wednesday that New York will distribute one million masks for free to residents.

"This is a temporary situation. It's not Covid," she told a news conference, adding that New York City buses and trains have high-quality air filtration systems and are therefore safe modes of travel.

Environment Canada has said conditions are worsening in Toronto on June 8 as the amount of smoke increases.

In a special weather advisory on June 7, the agency recommended that everyone wear masks when outdoors.

"These fine particles pose the greatest risk to health. However, respirators do not reduce exposure to gases in fire smoke," Environment Canada said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified the air quality in much of the northeast of the country as "unhealthy" especially for people with breathing problems.

In all, millions of people in North America are thought to be in some form of air quality alert.

In New York, an orange haze covered the city skyline and landmarks, including the Statue of Liberty.

Zoos have moved animals indoors and, in New York, horse-drawn carriage rides have been suspended.
