The price of bread does not follow the downward trend of wheat on foreign exchanges/ the Association of Producers reveals why costs have increased by over 50%

The price of bread does not follow the downward trend of wheat on foreign

The selling price of bread is not expected to follow the downward trend of wheat prices on foreign exchanges.

Bread producers raise the concern of very high costs they are paying due to labor shortages.

Representatives of the Flour Processing Association claimed for Monitor that currently the selling price of flour for bread is 65 Lek per kg from 90 Lek per kg that was sold in the period after the Russia-Ukraine war.

The sale price of bread flour has decreased by about 27% compared to June last year. The reduction in the price of flour was influenced by the drop in the price of wheat on foreign exchanges.

Consumers are concerned that the drop in the price of flour for bread production must necessarily be reflected in the drop in the price of this product.

Bread producers claim that there can be no price drop, as the labor cost is too high. They add that the selling price of flour also remains high.

The chairman of the Association of Bread, Confectionery and Pastry Producers, Gëzim Peshkopia, told Monitor that in order to maintain the current workforce, bakeries across the country have increased wages for employees by 50 to 80% since September of last year. The lack of manpower, according to him, is more acute especially in the districts.

"There is a lack of specialists for dough processing in the country. Even though all bread producers have increased the wages of employees by over 50%, they fail to find specialists. It is very difficult to find specialists even with a monthly salary of 80,000 and 120,000 per month. While for other dough and pastry products, not including mass bread, the prices of ingredients, such as margarine, cottage cheese, sesame (for sesame bread), etc. remain very high. Even the cost of energy remains high for bakeries".
