WHO alert: Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise, young people are also

The World Health Organization has warned that sexually transmitted diseases are increasing significantly. As foreign media reports, more than 1 million people are infected with syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis every day.

The report notes an increase in syphilis among adults but also congenital syphilis during the pandemic. At a time when experts were aiming for a tenfold reduction in syphilis cases, what was seen was an increase of nearly 1 million infections, bringing the total number of syphilis cases to 8 million worldwide.

New HIV infections were reduced from 1.5 million in 2020 to 1.3 million in 2022. Five main population groups, men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, sex workers, transgender individuals and individuals in prisons and other settings closed, still experience significantly higher HIV prevalence rates than the general population.

It is estimated that about 55% of new HIV infections occur among these populations and their partners. As for hepatitis, about 1.2 million new cases of hepatitis B and nearly 1 million new cases of hepatitis C were registered in 2022.

Albania has also followed the only upward trend in terms of sexually transmitted infections, which experts have informed that even young people are being affected. Global experts report that HIV, viral hepatitis epidemics and sexually transmitted infections continue to pose significant public health challenges, causing 2.5 million deaths each year.
