Alda Bardhyli: We have paid special attention to Albanian authors, making them more present in the public discourse

Written by Nga Julia Vrapi 27 Janar 2023

The National Book and Reading Center designs programs and funds projects in the field of books. Director Alda Bardhyli says that the year 2022 was a year of challenge in consolidating the work of a new institution, not only from the administrative side, but also with the profiling in the public discourse of the approach to a new book policy. Bardhyli states that attention has been paid to our authors in the work of the KLKLL. "We have paid special attention to Albanian authors, making them more present in the public discourse", says Bardhyli. In the balance of the work done during 2022, the director of KKLL Bardhyli says that the challenge of reading is a challenge that unites us all. "It has been part of our work through "Albania Reads" throughout the past year, traveling to cities, villages across the country to talk about the importance of reading, and the values ??of reading for a better society tomorrow. More than 130 activities are marked by this campaign, which starts from KKLL and ends in different cities of the country, where publishers, writers, translators are involved and where there is more talk about the book", says Bardhyli. But the figures coming from booksellers and publishers about books are worrying for the director of the NKLL, Alda Bardhyli. Referring to European experiences, Bardhyli sees the drafting of a reading law as important. "The figures that come to us from booksellers, publishers, but also surveys increasingly show a decline in the sale of books, and consequently in reading. Therefore, regardless of the impact these meetings have, they are insufficient to perfect a relationship which has its genesis in a chain of relationships starting from education, schools. A few months ago I articulated referring to the experiences of European countries that have found a legal choice for this problem that should be of concern to every country, the creation of a law on reading", says Bardhyli. The director of KKLL sees the importance of the first translation workshop from French to Albanian, a joint project with the French Embassy, ??which aimed to train a new generation of translators, but according to her this is not enough. "We are working to set up the same workshop in other languages ??as well. But is this enough? Of course not! One of the main problems of Albanian is the lack of translators even from major languages", says Bardhyli. Funds for the book
In the past year, the director of KKLL also states that the fund of literary creativity for young people has supported 3 authors, while motivating for new publications and other participants in the competition. According to Bardhyl, the translation has been an important element, where the work in the KKLL has been focused. "Just a month ago I was in France where, together with the French CNL and the Book Directorate at the Ministry of Culture of France, we agreed on greater support and funding space for Albanian books in the French language and facilities for Albanian publishers. , which they will apply to their funds", she says. Bardhyli says that in 2022, together with the French embassy in Albania, 12 publications were financed through a joint program of translations from French to Albanian. The translation fund from the Albanian language into a foreign language supported 6 Albanian authors to be published in other languages, while 3 works of young authors were financed in children's literature. "Poet Laureate", an initiative of the NKLL during the year 2022 marked 50 activities with a focus on Albanian poetry.
