You will be surprised, what does the letter "i" in the word iPhone stand for?!
Written by SOT.COM.AL 1 Shkurt 2023
In 1998, Steve Jobs introduced the iMac, Apple's first product. The small letter "i" in front of most Apple products has become so familiar that now almost no one pays attention to it anymore, and even fewer people know what it really means.
Have you ever wondered what the prefix "i" actually means?
Usually, people assume it means – 'intelligent or irreplaceable' – and some even thought the 'i' meant 'my phone', but it's not.
In 1998, Steve Jobs introduced the iMac, the first Apple product with the now famous prefix. His idea was simple – the "i" stands for what most people will use a personal computer for, which is the Internet. However, the explanation did not end there, so Jobs later found out what the letter "i" symbolizes, and in fact it is not just one word, but five, which symbolize the entire identity of his company.
Accordingly, he said that after the letter 'i' stands "individuality, guidance, information and inspiration". He also mysteriously said that it actually "had no official meaning," alluding to what it potentially means as a "personal pronoun" and "instructions for educational purposes."
The company soon began using the 'i' in almost all products, from iTools software to hardware, including the iPod and eventually we got the iPhone, although there were legal complications at first, as Cisco used the same name for its own product.
Today, the well-known prefix is ??a trademark of the Apple company, although it has been phased out with the latest products, for example Apple TV and Apple Watch. In any case, it is unlikely that anyone in the near future will associate the small "i" in front of the product name with anything other than Apple products.
