Counts to 100 in 6 languages, meet the 4-year-old genius who can read

A child genius who learned to read at the age of two has become Britain's youngest member of Mensa (an organization which supports highly gifted children). Teddy Hobbs can now read Harry Potter books and count to 100 in six other languages, including Mandarin, Welsh, French, Spanish and German.

The toddler, who was born through IVF, was accepted into the elite organization aged three years and nine months last year after scoring 139 on an IQ test. Parents Beth and Will Hobbs, from Portishead, Somerset, had no idea how clever Teddy was.

“We did an IQ test, told him he was going to sit down and do some puzzles with a lady for an hour, and he thought it was the most amazing thing. After he finished it, we were told that he had the right to join Mensa,"  his mother said.

His mother also reveals that Teddy has no interest in games or TV, but in solving various exercises and challenges. Teddy also remembers the conversations they had last year for Christmas. He doesn't want to play, but he wants to use apps that teach him to count to 100 in many different languages.

Teddy's parents are trying to keep him "humble" despite his intelligence, to prevent him from developing any kind of "superiority complex".

Now 4 years old, Teddy is apparently unaware of how gifted he is compared to other children his age.

"His friends can read a few letters of the alphabet, while he can read Harry Potter. I remember one day I took him to daycare and told him that he taught himself to read and no one believed me at first. Of course we don't let him read Harry Potter, we choose more emotionally appropriate books, but he's basically at the stage where he can read anything we put in front of him ," she said.
