Why do you have terrible dreams moments before you wake up?

Experiencing 'real', intense and terrifying dreams moments before waking up is a phenomenon known as 'hypnopompic hallucinations'

About 8 percent of people ages 15 to 44 have reported experiencing these dreams, according to a study from Stanford University.

During these dreams you feel as if you are still asleep, but in fact you are in the transition time between sleep and waking from sleep.

You are not actually even asleep when these dreams appear, because they are not even “dreams. During these hallucinations, the brain is in a half-asleep/half-awake state. Part of the brain is still in the REM stage – the deep stage of sleep where the brain is most active.

When you start to wake up, the dream images of REM sleep interfere with the waking state. This causes you to experience hallucinations.

Hypnopompic hallucinations can be visual (you see a scene or situation in your mind), auditory (you think you hear something, like a knock on the door or someone calling your name) or tactile (you feel like someone is touching you). .

You can also experience these in regular dreams. Because these hallucinations are and seem so vivid, they are often terrifying and frightening. While anyone can experience these hallucinations, they are more common in people who spend more time in REM sleep.

This may be due to lack of sleep, certain medications or sleep disorders.

Consequently, you can avoid these hallucinations by getting better sleep. This means cultivating a regular sleep cycle and making sure you get at least 7 or 8 hours of sleep every night.
