Can a social movement from the radical left or right penetrate the old political establishment and be elected at the national level? The two dominant political parties in Albania disagree on many things, but there is one thing they do agree on: The system must be created to help them maintain their power. From early voting in the past to limiting citizen ballot initiatives, socialists and democrats have done their best to build a system that takes power away from the people and keeps it in the hands of parties. A new wave of anti-establishment parties has shaken European politics. A diverse group of people and groups from the left, right, and no fixed ideological stance are attacking the mainstream center-left and center-right. Our country is no exception to this European trend. Recent developments in the country clearly show that many left-wing and right-wing populist social movements are transforming into political movements, or more precisely, they have an amorphous form between social and political movements. We can mention here the movement led by Arlind Qorri, or the one led by Adriatik Llapaj and the conservative movement initiated by Evi Kokalari. We remember that before we also had the social movement led by Erjon Veliaj who later joined the Socialist Party. In this reality there is no serious alternative in our country, where moreover the law is no longer made by political parties and even less by the opposition, it seems as if the only force in place are the oligarchs. Seen from abroad, the country has a multiparty system, but in fact we have an oligarchic system. in which the oligarchs decide to switch and finance those political formations and individuals who have more credibility and serve them better. In these conditions, it is normal for these social movements with political tendencies to appear, just as various forms of populism appeared and strengthened throughout Europe after the powerful financial crisis after 2010. In recent years, Europe has seen the rise of ideologically diverse political forces that describe themselves more as movements than parties. In Italy, the "Five Star Movement" finished first in the parliamentary elections of March 2018." Podemos” has established itself as one of Spain's leading political actors. Sebastian Kurz won Austria's October 2017 election and became chancellor. Even the UK Labor Party now emphasizes its movement-like qualities. The most successful has been French President Emmanuel Macron's En Marche, which came to power only a year after its launch. But Macron's creation, since renamed La République En Marche (LREM), is a new kind of party-movement hybrid; it was founded without the institutional support of a previous protest party or movement, or the appeal of a well-known public figure. Also in Greece, Syriza was created as a "crisis party" that managed to exploit the discontent and poverty created by the financial crisis and the euro. Also in the USA in 2016, a populist leader, Donald Trump, won the presidential elections. In such situations where there are no alternatives, there is very little room left for politics and the capacity of the existing parties to capture and direct the political conflict is reduced. In the case of Spain and Greece, this appeared not only in left-wing populism, but also in far-right nationalism. Podemos and Syriza were the "crisis parties" that managed to exploit the discontent, but also the far-right party in Greece, "Golden Dawn", managed to get great popular support. "Albania Becomes", the newest civic movement in Albania, is articulating its debate by claiming that it represents the 'people' and is against the 'elite' and is creating its own electoral and political strategy. on this antagonism. In this process, this movement wants to be able to represent the social groups that are most affected by the crisis in the country (unemployed young people, pensioners, civil servants, farmers) implying 'the people' as the point of identification for all these groups and thus creating a collective identity that signifies the majority of people as the totality of 'people'. In this aspect, it must be said that the "Together Movement" led by Arlind Qorri is not far behind. Also in the right-wing spectrum, the "Conservative Movement" of Evi Kokalari has emerged as an alternative to the existing chaos in the right-wing camp with the claim of representing conservative values ??under the example of American conservatism represented by former American President Donald Trump. They have one thing in common. these new social-political movements that their programs seem to be only promises and good intentions. Their program presentation reads like a long wish list. The programs also call for new taxes on the wealthy and on financial transactions. They promise higher pensions and wages, as well as an increase in spending on health care, education and other social services, however, without elaborating on how those plans will be paid for. Let's hope that this new social political movement will change the political byzantism in Albania and not end up as political appendages of the big parties, as Veliaj's "Enough" movement ended, or like Syriza in Greece and the Podemos movement in Spain. One thing is clear that it is the moment to completely break away from the long transition, a new and western mentality is required in the country's politics. education and other social services, however, without elaborating how those plans will be paid for.
