Voice of America: Rama responded harshly to the Russian ambassador's comments about Zelensky's presence
Written by SOT.COM.AL 21 Shtator 2023
At Wednesday's meeting of the Security Council on Ukraine chaired by Prime Minister Edi Rama of Albania, Russia expressed displeasure with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the fact that he spoke in front of Council members.
The Voice of America also devoted an article to this debate between Rama and the Russian ambassador, who wrote that Rama responded harshly to the ambassador's comments.
But even before Zelenskyy took the floor, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, and Prime Minister Rama, exchanged harsh polemics. Russia expressed dissatisfaction with the participation of President Zelenskyy and the fact that he spoke before the members of the Council. Ambassador Nebenzia said that Albania had also broken the rules by inviting a large number of supporters (of Ukraine) from NATO countries, as well as North Macedonia's foreign minister, Bujar Osmani, as the next head of the OSCE.
Prime Minister Rama replied ironically that "this is not a special operation of the Albanian presidency", a reference to Russia's name for its offensive against Ukraine.
"We regret that the Albanian Presidency is showing an open disregard for the consensus practices of the Security Council. They are placing their political and ideological convictions of NATO over the obligations of the Security Council, which determines the procedures and must maintain an impartial position. Unfortunately, Albania failed to do such a thing today", said Ambassador Nebenzia.
Prime Minister Rama reacted strongly, saying that he found it interesting that Russia was lecturing about breaking the rules.
"But since you repeated many times that the violation is about the fact that President Zelenskyy speaks before the members of the Council, there is a solution to this, if you agree. You stop the war and President Zelenskyy does not take the floor. "What makes it important here, and what makes it important for all of us to hear it first and then discuss it, is caused by you, not by us," he said.
