The US emissary for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, in an interview for "Pavlovic Today", was asked about possible measures or consequences from the US to hold Prime Minister Albin Kurti responsible regarding the issue of dialogue.
He said that he does not want to talk about the measures, but about the consequences. Escobar said that Kosovo is already facing the consequences of its unwillingness to work closely with the European Union.
He said that he had offered Kosovo a new recognition campaign, to convince the different countries that Kosovo has done everything that was necessary according to the Ohrid Agreement.
Escobar has said that they also hoped for the US-Kosovo strategic dialogue, and that they can't wait for Kosovo to enter the NATO Partnership for Peace and to support Kosovo's candidacy for the EU. But he says that for this year these are not on the table, and he expressed hope that they could happen in 2024. All this, according to Escobar, since Kosovo is not implementing the Ohrid Agreement.
"I don't want to talk about the measures. I want to talk about the consequences. So, now Kosovo is facing the consequences of its unwillingness to work closely with the European Union. But what I'm saying is what you have are not consequences, but missed opportunities. So after Ohrid, I had discussed with the government of Kosovo, the US should start a new recognition campaign to convince the countries that Kosovo had done everything that was necessary according to the Ohrid agreement. We expected a bilateral strategic dialogue; we look forward to a closer relationship with NATO, potentially including the Partnership for Peace, and then supporting Kosovo's candidacy in the European Union. Unfortunately, because we haven't had any implementation in Ohrid, all of this is now off the table. I would like, I would hope that we could do that in 2024.”
