Do you often talk in your sleep? Find out why it happens and when you should see a doctor

Written by SOT.COM.AL 30 Janar 2023

According to sleep experts, about two out of three people talk in their sleep at some point. This is officially known as somniloquy, sleep talking is a type of parasomnia or abnormal sleep activity.
"It's usually harmless, but it could potentially indicate a significant sleep disorder or health problem," explained sleep scientist Teresa Schnorbach.
According to doctors, this can be related to recent events in the person's own life or simply the content of dreams.
"Risk factors for sleep talking include stress, lack of sleep and alcohol, but random words are rarely problematic. Mental health can also affect sleep talking, which is common in those with underlying mental health conditions," Teresa added. Also, she believes that people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are more susceptible to sleep talking.
When should you ask for help?
If you don't normally talk in your sleep, but you suddenly start talking, the reasons may be as follows:
Consumption of certain drugs
Sleep talking is usually nothing to worry about, however, if it starts suddenly in adults or involves anxiety, screaming or violent actions that may wake you up, then you should seek medical attention. /abcnews.al
