Everyone knows the expression "dishes with salt and pepper" reflecting the need to eat healthily, but without overdoing it. But when it comes to salt or sugar, it's very hard to resist.

Salt and sugar play several essential roles for our health. The brain needs sugar to produce energy, while the muscles need salt, but their role in the occurrence of some diseases is significant, especially when they are consumed in excess.

Experts are more concerned about refined sugar and added sweeteners than the natural sugars found in fruit.

According to them, indeed milk and 100% fruit juices contain added sugars and calories, but they also contain vitamins, minerals, proteins (in the case of milk) and polyphenols (in the case of juices) that are beneficial to humans.

The liver is the first organ that, to put it bluntly, is shocked by the sugar, working hard and producing a high level of fructose.

This causes a chain of metabolic reactions that, according to studies, lead to increased abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, fatty liver, and heart disease.

The human body needs salt to regulate fluids and conduct electrical discharges between cells.

In healthy people, an average amount of salt is easily digestible.

Excessive amounts of salt, on the other hand, require more time but are associated with long-term health problems.

The recommended daily amount is less than 2,300 milligrams or one teaspoon.

But most people do not heed the recommendations.

They consume an average of 3,400 milligrams, much more than a teaspoon.

For years, experts have claimed that salt causes an excess of fluids stored in the body and blood pressure in the veins, which leads to increased blood pressure.

The latter is the cause of many health problems related to the heart, kidneys and vision.

Which is the most harmful?
Neither salt nor sugar are very dangerous, as long as they are consumed in small amounts.

But if we put them head-to-head, experts think that excess sugar has a more negative impact on overall health.

Experts believe that salt is essential for the functioning of the organism, while sugar is not so necessary, and above all can be replaced with natural sweeteners such as honey, etc.

A 2014 study published in the Journal Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome found that, in turn, sugar can increase the negative impact of salt.
