The month of Ramadan, which began today, March 23, is the holiest month of the Islamic calendar.

It includes abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk.

Fasting started more than 1,400 years ago, and the health benefits are enormous.

Limiting food intake during the day prevents health problems such as high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity.

It also helps improve mental health and well-being.

By not consuming any food, our body is able to focus on removing toxins as we give the digestive system a break.
