The rules change! Cervical cancer vaccine, here's what the WHO recommends

The World Health Organization has changed the rules regarding the doses to be given for vaccination against cervical cancer, Human Papilloma virus.

According to the new changes, girls aged 9-14 should take 1 or two doses. The same goes for girls from 15 to 20 years old. While over 21 years old should do two doses with an interval of 6 months.

These recommendations have also reached the public health system in Albania.

"From the latest estimates of the WHO, the vaccine is highly effective with only one dose. For the other age groups where three doses were recommended, two doses are needed", the head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Silva Bino, told Top Channel.

Bino explains that the vaccine against HPC has had a good progress and later it is expected that girls of older ages will be included in the program.

"It has been 2-3 months since we started vaccination and we are seeing acceptability. Fortunately, there were no side effects," said Silva Bino.
