Sleep paralysis, what causes the dreaded sleep disorder

Sleep paralysis, what causes the dreaded sleep disorder

Sleep paralysis is described by those who have experienced it as the terrifying feeling of being unable to move while still conscious.

It is a sleep disorder that has been attributed over the centuries, in almost all cultures, to the presence of "demons" and "dark" creatures of the night.

The symptoms of sleep paralysis vary in both their nature and intensity from person to person, but the common denominator is the inability to move, full consciousness and a sense of fear.

Scientists who study sleep have come to the conclusion that, in most cases, sleep paralysis is an indication that the transition from one stage of sleep to another is not happening smoothly. In only a few cases, sleep paralysis has been linked to an underlying psychiatric disorder.

The phenomenon of sleep paralysis occurs during the transition from the stages of sleep to the stages of consciousness. During this transition, the person is unable to move and/or speak for a few seconds to a few minutes. Some people also feel pressure in their chest or feel like they are suffocating.

Sleep paralysis is divided into two types, depending on the time in which it manifests: The first type is hypnagogic sleep paralysis, which occurs when we are passing from the phase of consciousness to the sleep phase, and the second type is hypnopompic sleep paralysis . , which appears upon awakening, i.e. when we pass from the sleep phase to the consciousness phase.

Sleep paralysis is more common than you might think. According to expert estimates, it appears in up to 40% of the general population, with the first episodes usually being recorded in adolescence.

Factors that have been linked to sleep disturbance include:

- lack of sleep

– irregular sleeping schedule

– increased stress

– other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy

- drug abuse
