On Thursday, March 23, Muslim believers begin the month of Ramadan. However, fasting is a practice that can be followed by everyone, because it has important health benefits.
Fasting is practiced for religious and spiritual reasons, and although it is most widespread among Muslim believers, it is actually also a practice of other religions, such as Christianity, Buddhism and Judaism. Fasting has been a practice present in humans throughout evolution. Since it was often difficult to consume food at any time, as a result they evolved to be able to go without food for extended periods of time.
Intermittent fasting is one of the most popular health and fitness trends these days. This practice is known as Intermittent Fasting (IF) and is an eating pattern that cycles between eating and fasting. IF doesn't dictate what you should eat, but when you should eat it.
- The 16/8 method: consists of consuming food for 8 hours and stopping it for the following 16 hours. So, eat enough from 13:00 – 21:00 then fast for 16 hours.
- The "eat-stop-eat" method: includes fasting for 24 hours; eat for example at lunch and then eat lunch again the next day.
– The 5:2 method: based on this method, consume 500-600 calories over two consecutive days and then eat normally the other 5 days of the week.
The 16/8 method is more widespread, as it is easier for people to adapt.

– Insulina: agjërimi ul nivelin e sheqerit në gjak dhe rrit nga 20-31% nivelet e insulinës, të cilat janë të rëndësishme kundër diabetit të tipit 2.
– Shëndeti i zemrës: agjërimi i përhershëm mund të zvogëlojë kolesterolin e dëmshëm, trigliceridet e gjakut, sheqerin në gjak.
– Lufta me kancerin: studimet te kafshët kanë vërtetuar se agjërimi mund të parandalojë kancerin.
– Shëndeti i trurit: agjërimi rrit hormonin BDNF që ndihmon në rritjen e qelizave të reja nervore. Ka ndikim gjithashtu në luftën kundër Alzheimer-it.
– Efekti anti-plakje: redukton rrudhat dhe rrit jetëgjatësinë. Studimet e kryere te minjtë arritën në përfundimit se pas agjërimit, këto specie arritën të jetonin 36-38% më shumë se të tjerët.
Intermittent Fasting nuk është për të gjithë. Personat që kanë probleme me çrregullimin e të ushqyerit duhet të konsultohen me mjekët pasi në këto raste, mund të ketë rrezikshmëri. Raste të tjera kur duhet të konsultoheni me mjekun para se të praktikoni IF:
– nëse vuani nga diabeti
– keni presion të ulët të gjakut
– merrni medikamente
– jeni nënpeshë
– po përpiqeni të mbetni shtatzënë
– jeni shtatzënë ose ushqeni fëmijën me gji
